FRISCO, Texas – The Liberty High School (Frisco, Texas) baseball team has been named the 2021 Keeper of The Game Team of the Year, the foundation announced May 6. The Redhawks, led by head coach Scott McGarrh, are the second ever winners of the prestigious award.
The Keeper of The Game Team of the Year Award was created to honor a baseball or softball team that displays outstanding passion for serving their local special needs community and supporting the Keeper of The Game Foundation during their season. The Stephen F. Austin State University baseball team won the inaugural award in 2020.
“To be awarded a national team award from Keeper of The Game is truly an honor, and one that we as a staff are tremendously proud of for our young men past and present,” McGarrh said. “When we talk about servant leadership, we stress that it’s not about the recognition. It’s simply about lending a helping hand.”
LHS has provided tremendous contributions to the Keeper of The Game Strike Out Hunger Food Drive that benefits the Frisco Family Services Food Pantry. The annual event is also a competition between Frisco ISD baseball and softball programs to see who can donate the most items. Due to the Redhawks’ efforts, LHS has won four consecutive titles. During that time, the Redhawks have led the way for more than 25,000 pounds of food to be collected for families in need.
“The fact that Keeper of The Game chose to recognize the Redhawk baseball program for the work the players have done over the past four years is incredibly moving,” McGarrh said. “It will inspire future Redhawks to grow the tradition of serving and leading in our community.”
LHS has logged numerous additional volunteer hours in and around the Frisco community, including assisting with The Miracle League of Frisco clinics. The Redhawks can be seen supporting Keeper of The Game year-round by wearing the foundation’s bracelets, T-shirts and hoodies.
“This award represents the amazing service the Liberty High School baseball team accomplished during the 2021 season, but the Redhawks have met community needs for several years alongside our foundation,” Keeper of The Game Founder James Vilade said.
The LHS baseball team has had approximately 40 seniors over the last four years. The coaching staff also includes assistant coaches Mickey Sepanek and Kenny Schiumo.
“We are thankful for the Redhawks’ hard work and impressive team chemistry,” Vilade said. “Thanks to head coach Scott McGarrh, the coaching staff and all the players for being true Keepers of The Game.”
LHS accepted its award April 22 during a pregame ceremony at its home baseball field. Keeper of The Game Executive Director Bryan Hoctor presented the award to McGarrh and players Owen Archer, Cade McGarrh, Jace McQueary and Lawson Towne.
